Most people would say that the character’s shading looks great… but not our David! He’s a perfectionist and even though the shading is good it’s not perfect, and so he adds another layer, the “Hi Lite” layer.
Again, taking the sources of light in the scene into account, he takes a solid white brush (for the older issues) or a slightly transparent white brush (for later comics) and brushes on highlights… on the shoulders, and any other area that would be shined on with the light.
It’s a small change, but it adds just that much more “pop” into the characters.
