Vulpix Come Home 6
Modern Day Note: We’d like to apologize for the lack of updates last week; it’s been a bit crazy around Missing Number HQ, and unfortuantly our Subersion Repository that we use for managing the comic went a little… caca. (It ain’t Quantum Physics, so I don’t know why it’s being so difficult!) In any case, to make up for it, this Saturday’s update is a Triple Update. Click here to go back three comics.
We’re in the process of completing an update to The Comics Engine (the application this site runs on), and it’s causing delays all across the board. One of the things were going to be pushing is our RSS feed, which will allow you to keep Up To Date with our comics! Keep an eye out for Engine 2! P.S… the next comic update is slightly delayed for the same reason…
Whew! This one was loads of fun!
The sketch artist has never, ever drawn Officer Jenny before. So, obviously, Missing Number HQ decided to put seven of them in one comic!
The inker had lots of fun as well. Even with this speedy inking technique, it still takes a lot of time to go through all the frames and ink the various pieces. And the colorist had lots of fun as well. He thinks that Panel 2 came out best of all!
There are two “references” in this comic. First off, the easy one: Naruto. The last two weeks hasn’t been an easy one for productivity, as a small chunk of time has been diverted to watching Naruto. The inker and colorist have seen the entire series as released (over the course of many months), but the sketch artist just “discovered” the series for himself. We enjoy it… maybe a bit too much.
The other reference is to the character from Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, an excellent read. It’s one of the sketch artist’s favorite books, and a great insight into the unconscious and conscious decisions involved in building a really good comic. I only hope that our comics reflect some of the insights from that book!
In any case, enjoy this issue. We will be doing more site maintenance over the next week, so don’t be too surprised if the next issue is late as well
And, as always, if you like our comic, please give us a vote! It never hurts!

Officer Jenny pulls the radio handset from her motorcycle, tunes into the police frequency, and presses the talk button. “EMERGENCY OVERRIDE! Clear the channel! Calling all stations!”
All around the OhNo Region, Police scanners all pick up the voice of the Glitch City Officer Jenny…
…in the middle of a chase between a member of Team Rocket and Officer Jenny, filming for the local version of COPS, in the background you hear the call, “This is a Missing Pokemon alert. Please be on the lookout for a missing Vulpix…”
…in a Fast Food restaurant in another city, two Officer Jennys sit down to lunch as their radio squacks the call. “The subject disappeared from Glitch City at about 6 PM…”
…on a routine traffic stop between cities, one Officer Jenny attempt to handle an unrepentant driver. “You can’t give ME a ticket!!!” shouts the driver as he points to himself. “Don’t you know who I am?” Officer Jenny rolls her eyes as the radio call continues. “The Subject Pokemon is 2 foot tall, orange and white, with 7 tails and three curls of hair…”
…in a remote police station on the other side of the peninsula, the call comes in on the wall radio. Two Officer Jennys are in charge of the local lock-up. The call continues… “And goes by the name ‘Vulpix.’” One of the Officers looks around from her reclined position as the other one walks up to the cell and opens the door. “Sorry,” starts Officer Jenny with an apologetic look on her face. “We’re looking for a VULPIX, not NINETAILS. You are free to go.” Inside the cell, Naruto stands up, stuffs his hands into his pocket, and walks out of the cell. Giving Officer Jenny a baleful look, he mumbles “Dattebayo” under his breath as he walks out…
…far away from the OhNo Region, another officer recieves the call. He walks over to the desk with the radio, picks it up, and presses the talk button. “This is Officer Copper!” he shouts into the handset. “Who are you? What the heck is a Vulpix? HOW DID YOU GET ON THIS FREQUENCY?”
In the background, Officer Copper’s partner, Booker, holds up a spaghetti-strap top and miniskirt. “Are you SURE this is yours?” he asks to the only patron in the police station, a dumpy looking guy with horns on his hat and a vacant expression on his face. “You’re not going to take this right to Nook’s and sell it…” he asks, as his enthusiasm for his job wavers. “Even though that’s exactly… what I would do…”
